Operation Gladio

Operation Gladio is the codename for a clandestine North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) "stay-behind" operation in Italy during the Cold War. (Wikipedia)

NATO and CIA created a secret guerrilla groups in order to establish resistance movements in case of a Soviet invasion. These guerrillas trained in a very secretive way hiding them even from local governments. For instance, this operation started in Italy around 1956 but discovered in 1990. Same operations also held in other countries around the region such as Greece, Turkey, Bulgaria etc.

After Soviet threat is gone, these guerrilla groups were involved in mafia organizations and killed thousands of left-wing people in those countries.
